I enjoyed the Harvey awards. It was great to be in a room with all that comic talent. What wasn't so great was the winners, the greater talents by the awards were absent. Apart from 2 recipients, surrogates were sent to recieve the awards "on behalf of . . ." That kind of killed the event for me.
We had a fabulous presenter in Kyle Baker, full of life and energy; a terrifc keynote address by Jerry Robinson (created The Joker!) about the days of comics when a creator was not just a cartoonist, but an entertainer, a comedian; and then it was ruined by acceptance speeches of "thank you," over and again.
I felt it was just as much a slight to the recipients as the organizers. To have an employer or co-worker step up to recieve your award and say nothing about your work is terrible. The nominees were not a surprise. Would it have taken more than a few minutes to write on an index card about how much you enjoy the work that your contributors do to further your company?
For those interested in Harvey Kurtzman, a short bio can be found here. He was the founder of MAD magazine and became known as the Step-Father of underground comics through his work with R.Crumb and others.
